Write down your reasoning while it is fresh. The value comes later, when you compare what you expected with what actually happened.

About IPO Decision Journal

The Decision Journal is a private place to write down why you applied for, skipped or exited an IPO — before you know how it turned out — so you can later compare your reasoning against the actual result.

Why a journal is worth keeping

Memory quietly rewrites itself around outcomes. After an IPO doubles, most people remember being confident; after one falls, they remember having doubts. Neither memory is reliable, which makes it very hard to tell whether your process is improving.

A note written before the outcome is known is the only honest record of what you actually thought at the time.

What to record

Three things: the decision itself, the reasoning that genuinely drove it, and what you expected to happen. The expectation matters — "I think this lists around 15% up because the book is strong" is something you can check later, while "I felt good about it" is not.

Be specific and be honest. A journal that records the reasoning you wish you had is worse than no journal.

Reviewing your entries

Once the outcome is known, add it to the entry. Over time the pattern that matters is not how often you were right, but whether you were right for the reasons you gave.

A profitable decision made on faulty reasoning is a warning sign, not a success. So is a losing decision made on sound reasoning — that one is usually just variance.

Privacy

Entries are stored in your browser's local storage and never leave your device. There is no account, no sync and no server copy. The practical trade-off is that entries do not follow you to another browser or device, and clearing your browsing data will delete them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are my entries stored?
In your browser's local storage only. Nothing is sent to our servers, and clearing browser data will delete them.
Why write down my reasoning?
Memory reshapes itself around outcomes. A note written before the result is the only honest record of what you actually thought at the time.
What should I record as the outcome?
Whatever makes the comparison useful to you — listing price, whether you were allotted, or simply whether your original reasoning held up.
Can I use this on more than one device?
Not currently. Entries live in the browser you created them in, so they will not follow you to another device or browser.
