About Goal Planner
Goal planning turns a future rupee need — education, wedding, house down payment — into a monthly SIP (and optional existing savings) given years and expected return. Separate goals beat one vague “wealth” target.
What is a goal planner?
It answers: if I need ₹X on a date, and I already have ₹Y invested for that goal, what monthly SIP closes the gap at an assumed return? Indian households use it for children’s education, weddings and house down payments so SIPs map to dates instead of open-ended hope.
How this calculator works
Enter the goal amount (preferably the inflation-adjusted future cost), years remaining, expected annual return, and existing savings earmarked for that goal. Existing savings are grown at the same return; the residual gap is converted into a monthly SIP using the SIP-target formula.
Formula / methodology
Future value of existing = existing × (1 + r)^years. Gap = max(0, target − future value of existing). Monthly SIP = gap ÷ [((1 + i)^n − 1) / i × (1 + i)], where i = r/12 and n = years × 12 (standard future-value of an annuity due-style SIP identity used across EnrichReturns SIP tools).
Worked example
Target ₹50 lakh in 10 years at 12% assumed return with ₹2 lakh already invested. Existing savings grow to about ₹6.2 lakh, leaving a gap near ₹43.8 lakh. The SIP required is about ₹18,850/month in this illustration. Create one plan per goal, sum the SIPs, and check they still fit after EMIs and an emergency fund.
Advantages
Converts fuzzy goals into a monthly number you can automate. Makes existing earmarked savings count instead of ignoring them. Encourages separate pots so one shortfall does not raid another goal.
Assumptions and limitations
Markets do not deliver a straight line to your goal date. If returns lag, increase SIP, extend tenure, or lower the goal. Taxes and expense ratios are not subtracted separately — bake a buffer into the assumed return. Educational only.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a goal planner calculator?
- It finds the monthly SIP (or investment) needed to reach a future goal amount given years and expected return.
- Should goals be inflation-adjusted?
- Yes. Enter the future cost of the goal (today’s cost grown with inflation), not just today’s price.
- Can I plan multiple goals?
- Plan each goal separately, then add required SIPs. Make sure total SIPs plus EMIs still fit your budget.
- What if markets return less than assumed?
- Increase SIP, extend tenure, or lower the goal. Review annually and use step-up SIPs when income grows.
- Is lumpsum better than SIP for goals?
- Lumpsum can work if money is ready and horizon is long. SIP reduces timing risk when you invest from salary over time.
